Gridley Checklist

Hiking Gridley to the water trough (less than 3 miles) yesterday.  Spotted 3 from my “rare beauties” list.  I am officially adding Death Camas to my list, with a name like that you know it’s badass.  Ojai Fritillary will be blooming in another month or so, for those of you keeping score.  I found at least 24 blooms, not counting the sages, some fading ceanothus and the California Everlasting for which the picture came out blurry.  Can you top that?

Nice photos, as usual. Some quite stunning. Beautiful Scarlet Larkspur. Like my beloved high school drama always drilled into our heads, “There’s no substitute for good material.” Your mystery oak could be Interior Live Oak if it was up higher and some of the leaves had spines like Coast Live Oak but most did not. I refer to your pea as Canyon Pea. i think of Sweet Peas as being solely a flowering variety whereas our local peas are edible. Not that everyone should rush out and harvest them. Ah, so many names to choose from.

Interior live oak.. thanks Lanny, some of the leaves did have spines. It’s right next to the trough along with the larkspur, silk tassel, seep monkeyflower and flowering ash, none of which appear at all until then. such a cool spot! (trough being full for Luke doesn’t hurt either)
